Experts say the city, which is known for its greenery, is crumbling under population growth and mushrooming housing societies.
According to official statistics, the city’s population has increased by 100% in the last 20 years.
The city was designed following the model of Ankara, Turkey’s capital, combining hillocks and plains in its design, as well as elegant walkways and broad roads.
General Ayub Khan, the country’s military dictator and president from 1958 to 1969 had approved the commission’s recommendation to build a new capital in the Margalla Hills in 1959.
The city was founded in 1960 over a land area of 906 square kilometers at the foot of the Margalla Hills.
Karachi, the country’s harbor metropolis and economic powerhouse, had been the capital until then.
Some of the major attractions of the city include the Faisal Mosque, the world’s fifth-biggest mosque, Pir Sohawa, Rawal Lake, the Centaurus Mall, Lok Virsa Museum, and the Pakistan Museum of National History.
