It’s hard to imagine that the Great Wall of Sindh, which is often compared as a new wonder of the world, is located in the wilds of Sindh’s interior. But yes it is!
Ranikot Fort, hailed as the “world’s largest fort,” is a sight to see.
The fate of the ancient RaniKot Fort is unknown and remains a mystery.
The fort was constructed on the Sindhi Khirthar Ranges’ mountains.
It is approximately 28 kilometers from Jamshoro City’s Sann Gate, and is believed to be the world’s largest fort, with walls stretching nearly 35 kilometers.
Although the exact date of the creation of the fort is unknown, archaeologists believe it was built in the 9th century.
Through the National Highway, this fort is easily accessible from Karachi.
After leaving Karachi and passing through, take the Indus Highway to Dadu and the fort is just 30 kilometers ahead! Despite the poor state of the road, the trip takes just 30 to 40 minutes.
Archaeologists are working hard to ensure that RaniKot Fort receives the recognition it deserves.
Because of its resemblance to China’s Great Wall, it is commonly referred to as “The Great Wall of Sindh.”
It has been on the tentative list to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Its status is still up in the air, though it is regarded as Sindh’s most fascinating location.
There are four main entrance gates:
- Eastern Gate or Sann Gate
- Southern Gate or Shahper Darwaza
- North Eastern Gate or Amri Gate
- Western Gate or Mohan Gate
Two small forts are located within the fort, each at a different height.
Meri Kot is the name of the lower one, and Shergarh is the name of the top one.
Shergarh is at a kilometer distance from Miri Kot, which is roughly three kilometers from the eastern gate. Both of the forts appear to be residential.
To give you a sense of how big RaniKot Fort is, just know that it is big enough to fit hundreds of additional forts inside.
